Day 2 has been another brilliant day of adventure! 🌲🔥
Today, Year 5 have been fully immersed in the countryside, developing new skills and building confidence every step of the way. They learnt how to prepare kindling, safely make fire, explored the forest, worked together on outdoor challenges and, of course, enjoyed the reward of toasting marshmallows and making delicious s’mores around the campfire.
Beyond the fun, these experiences are helping our children become more independent, resilient and collaborative. From encouraging one another on woodland trails to trying something new for the very first time, they are making the most of every opportunity.
As you can see from the smiles, they’re having an incredible time. Now it’s time to refuel with dinner before another evening of adventures!

A first day and night of adventure, teamwork and unforgettable memories. 🌿⛺
Year 5 have had a fantastic first day at their residential with The Garden Classroom in the Kent countryside. From walking through the lanes to camp, sharing meals together, learning around the fire and settling into camp life, they`ve thrown themselves into every new experience with enthusiasm.
Residentials like this are about so much more than a few nights away. Children develop independence, resilience, teamwork and confidence as they learn and live together outdoors, all as part of Springfield`s commitment to providing meaningful outdoor education. This reflects the school`s wider strategy to expand outdoor learning because we know it helps children grow socially, emotionally and academically.
For Year 5 families wondering how everyone is getting on... they`re having an amazing time. There have been plenty of smiles, lots of laughter, great food and new friendships growing by the hour. They`re being brilliantly looked after and are already making memories they`ll be talking about for years to come.

Well that was quite a week! Despite the 40 degree temperature today in our playground, we managed to stay cool enough, to enjoy ourselves and to do plenty of learning too. What a fab community we have. And what fab staff we have. Thank you all for your support, flexibility and positivity this week. We’re proud to have managed to stay open and make the most of extremely challenging conditions!

We’re making the most of the wonderful shade our grounds and woodland provide during this week’s hot weather.
Across the school, children have been enjoying learning and play in some of the coolest parts of our site, from Forest School sessions beneath the trees to outdoor lessons in the shade.
To help everyone stay safe and comfortable, we’ve adapted timetables, relaxed uniform expectations, encouraged regular water breaks and offered families the option of collecting children at 1.30pm this week.
Despite the high temperatures, Springfield has remained calm, happy and full of learning. We’re incredibly fortunate to have such green spaces for children to enjoy, even on the hottest days.

Year 1 have been putting their science learning into practice as they explored the flowers and plants growing around our school grounds.
Armed with the knowledge they have been building in class, the children headed outside to identify different flowers, compare their features and ask questions about the plants they discovered. They looked closely, talked with one another about what they noticed and even stopped to smell some of the flowers along the way!
Learning outdoors gives children the chance to apply their knowledge in a real-world context. It encourages curiosity, careful observation and rich discussion, helping scientific understanding to grow through first-hand experience.
At Springfield, our beautiful grounds are more than just a playground. They are a living classroom, full of opportunities for children to explore, discover and deepen their understanding of the natural world.

79 years ago today, the Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks.
On board were hundreds of people from across the Caribbean who answered Britain’s call for workers after the Second World War. They came as nurses, engineers, teachers, drivers, builders and public servants, helping to rebuild the country and shape the London we know today.
Recently, Year 2 have been learning about the Windrush generation and their extraordinary contribution to our city. Using collage, the children explored the journey of the Empire Windrush and reflected on the stories, cultures and experiences of the people who made Britain their home.
In assembly today, Year 2 shared their learning with the rest of the school. They spoke confidently about the importance of remembering the contributions of the Windrush generation and recognising the lasting impact they have had on our communities.
As well as celebrating these contributions, we also reflected on the discrimination and racism many members of the Windrush generation faced, and the importance of continuing to challenge prejudice wherever we encounter it.
By learning these stories and sharing them with others, our children are helping to ensure that these voices are heard and that this important part of our shared history is never forgotten.

What happens when you combine microscopes, seeds, flowers and a room full of curious children?
This week, Year 2 spent the day exploring the fascinating world of plants at the Garden Museum.
The children investigated seeds, flowers and soil, used microscopes to examine tiny details that are usually hidden from view, and discovered how plants grow and reproduce. They asked thoughtful questions, made careful observations and worked together like young scientists.
The museum`s beautiful gardens and stunning displays sparked plenty of curiosity, helping children see that science is not just something that happens in a classroom. It is all around us.
Experiences like these help children develop scientific thinking, deepen their understanding of the natural world and inspire a lifelong sense of wonder.

Maths doesn`t only happen at a desk.
This week, children took their learning outside, using chalk, movement and teamwork to explore fractions, multiplication and mathematical reasoning.
By drawing large-scale models and explaining their thinking to one another, children were able to test ideas, spot patterns and solve problems together. Learning outdoors encourages discussion, collaboration and creativity, helping mathematical concepts come to life.

♻️ Where does our rubbish go?🌍
Year 3 visited EcoPark House, North London`s recycling and energy recovery centre, to find out.
The children toured the site, seeing first-hand how waste is collected, sorted and processed. They learnt how recyclable materials are separated and how some non-recyclable waste can be transformed into energy for local homes and businesses.
Back in the workshop, pupils put their learning into action by giving old T-shirts a new purpose, transforming them into reusable tote bags. This hands-on experience brought our learning about sustainability to life and encouraged children to think carefully about the choices they make every day.
We`re especially proud that many children have been inspired to take the message home, challenging themselves to repair or reuse old items rather than throw them away.

From garden to kitchen! 🍓🍫
Year 1 spent the day at Hackney School of Food, taking part in a hands-on workshop inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The children explored the gardens, learned about where ingredients come from and then became chefs for the day. They discovered how to melt chocolate using a bain-marie, prepared fresh fruit and created their own delicious chocolate-dipped fruit skewers.
Experiences like these help children make meaningful connections between books, food, science and the wider world. Along the way they developed teamwork, independence and confidence, as well as learning new skills in the kitchen.
Judging by the smiles (and the chocolate-covered faces!), the trip was a great success.

How often do children get the chance to hold a frame covered in live bees?
Year 4 spent the day exploring life on a working farm, learning about food production, animal care and the role insects play in our environment.
From feeding goats and chickens to meeting cattle, handling wool and taking part in a beekeeping workshop, children experienced first-hand where many everyday products come from and how living things depend on one another.
These experiences help bring classroom learning to life. They spark curiosity, build confidence and give children a deeper understanding of the natural world.
Sometimes the most memorable learning happens when children step outside the classroom.
